The Key to Better Balance
Your Your Feet Hold the Key to Better Balance — Here’s How
By: Ruth-Anne Lindsey
When most people think about balance, they imagine strong legs, a steady core, or good posture. And while all of these are important, there’s one area that often gets overlooked — your feet.
Your feet are full of small, intricate muscles that act like stabilizers for your entire body. They help you adapt to uneven ground, shift your weight safely, and stay steady as you move. Over time, these muscles can weaken — especially if you spend most of your day sitting, wear supportive shoes that do all the work for you, or simply haven’t trained them in years.
The good news? It’s never too late to start strengthening them again.
By doing simple exercises that wake up the muscles in your feet, you can dramatically improve your balance and stability. These movements may seem small, but they send powerful signals to your nervous system, teaching your body how to react quickly and confidently when you’re on the move.
In my upcoming Falls Prevention Workshop, I’ll be guiding you through practical exercises to strengthen not just your legs and core, but also those small, often-forgotten muscles in your feet. You’ll be surprised at how much difference just a few minutes of mindful practice can make.
If you’ve ever worried about stumbling or losing your balance, this workshop is designed for you. It’s encouraging, supportive, and completely doable — no extreme movements, no balancing on one foot required.
In the video below I show you a simple exercise you can easily do in the comfort of your own home. The exercise is called Feet Compressions, and they don't require you to stand on one foot. In fact this exercise can be done sitting in a chair if that's where you currently feel comfortable starting.
My Live Fall Prevention Workshop is on Monday, September 29th by Zoom. For just $15, you’ll learn and practice simple exercises you can do at home to boost your balance, reduce your risk, and walk with more confidence. But don’t wait too long — registration closes soon!
